What happened to getDare?

This seems to be a pretty popular question right now so I thought I would address it.

In short, I have no idea.

It is my understanding that not even the current active mods on getDare were given any notice or heads up at all that the site would be going down. As far as I know, the site was up and running like normal up until it wasn't. I heard that it was working on New Years Eve and then when folks tried to log in later, they were greeted with this message:

I have even heard from some people that subscriptions were still being collected up to a week before the shut down.

As for KinkTalk, an email went out to members a few hours ahead giving brief notice that the site was going down and then poof, it was gone too.

My best guess is that Depp (the owner) decided that he was done. He had mentioned it about this time last year that he wasn't sure if he could continue to fund things. The community rallied and we raised at least $5000 towards the operation of the site. However, I feel that since that time, things had kind of gone downhill.

getDare was a passion project for Depp and was started as a school project. I don't think he ever intended for it to become what it is. It is very clear that it was no longer a passion for him.

We will likely never know his reasons for shutting down the site. I am so sad about how it ended for all of you. The loss of connections, contacts and content across the two sites is heartbreaking.

All I can do at this time is be happy that I was pushed out 9 months ago so that I could create this safe place to take in all of those who are now looking for a kinky community to call home.

I welcome you all here and I hope that we can rebuild something amazing together.

Thank you for the warm welcome, Butterfly, and the work you put into this site. After ten years on getdare I hope this will become my new kinky place to be. I lost all my blogs, more then 250 pictures in 5 galleries, contacts, my threads, all in the blink of an eye. I have no idea why Depp (which by the way means "idiot" in German...) made no announcement 4 weeks before closing down the site so anyone could have saved what seemed valuable to him/her. And yes, even the admins had no idea. I talked to Buzby and Deschut not long ago and they didn't mention any changes regarding getdare. In those ten years I founded the Elite Slave Training School with some other dominants, made a stable for hucows and met many dedicated and passionate people. One of the reason why I quickly became a paying member of getdare - I really cherished the website, the work of the admins to keep it clean and spam free and I wanted it to stay that way by making my contribution. The fact that Depp took the money, as Butterfly reports, and ran, left a successful website with thousands of members and simply shut it down without notice makes me angry.
But - let us be thankful for the kinkywonderland. It will take me some time to install myself and discover the new place. And I hope many people from getdare will find this wonderland. I will tell anyone I know about it. Let's make this THE kinky place to be.

I am so sorry for your loss. Haha, I love that Depp means that in German.

I promise if we ever have to shut down here, there would be a min 1 month notice. But I dont see that happening any time soon.

I hope you can rebuild some of those things here.

Unfortunately the admins were overworked, not paid and shit on greatly. I don't plan on trying to make money with this site, but it would be nice for us to break even eventually.

I never understood Depp's approach, he seemed to enjoy tinkering and updated getdare for a while. But, then he launched kinktalk which was a newer design, closer to KinkyWonderland. Hardly anyone ever used kinktalk though, yet he kept that site going rather than merge the sites together and save on costs.

Anyway, what most people are annoyed about is that we got no notice - no time to get contact details of friends, or save our favourite content. Depp could do a banner to promote subscriptions but couldn't do one about a site closure? Seemed a little spiteful tbh, and the goodbye message "the world keeps moving, so will you" seems cold and lacking any empathy.

KinkTalk had been around and in the same format as getDare for years and years. Though a handful of years ago he had talked about updating them both but never got around to updating getDare. He said if he did that we would likely use big parts of the site, including the blog section,

I totally agree that the lack of notice was just uncalled for. And that goodbye message was like a big middle finger. I hate that it ended that way.
 
It was a very hard and sudden stop - although there were some signs before I guess... It's a loss, getDare was a fun place for a long period - let's make sure we make this a huge success together! Thanks for setting it up

I am sure it varies based on a lot of things. We also haven't been around for a full year yet. Right now it is about $100/month along with other initial costs or costs for add ons or certain projects that Inkwarden takes on. However, this will likely to go up as we grow. I am not sure how much getDare was costing a month/year. But they did also have some ad revenue as well as some subscriptions to help offset the cost a bit.

To be honest, even if you make money with this site, I would wholeheartedly grant you that (hope the translation doesn't sound too weird?^^)
At least it would motivate you even more, even in times where you don't feel kinky, to keep it going :)

I hope you can get break even soon. Is there the possibility to do a subscription for this site? Otherwise I need to remember myself to donate regularly, and I might forget about it.

But I agree, handing down the site would have been the better approach. And only then if no one wants to step into it, close it down...

By the way, I've never seen ads on gD except for Kinktalk (or maybe I overlooked them?) Are there companies which do adds on sexual sites? The big G doesn't do it as far as I know.

Thread 'How did we get here?'

With a new influx of people some of whom don't know me which is realistically everyone except the mods (I'm a very private person) here is my philosophy and how we got where we are. I want to write this to give some insight into my thoughts and the site as a whole and to just reassure some people on how things work and to also be transparent as I feel like there was little to none with GetDare.

I built this site for Butterfly because of the passion she had for GetDare. I never once asked for a dime to make it or to support it. I did it fully knowing it would cost money and likely never...
