Self-Spanking Implements and Safety

I've got an enormous punishment kink and I've been obsessed for a while with the concept of spanking. Not LIGHT spanking for funsies, or even moderate spanking, but the kind of spanking that leaves you kicking your feet and crying out and flinching with every hit.

Now, this type of play is two things:

1) Really hard to do to yourself! I could meet up with someone and hand them a paddle and they could give me what I want in five minutes with no practice, but my own brain has a pretty resilient 'wait don't hurt yourself' safeguard that makes it a real pain inflicting enough.. pain. Sometimes it's a bit like trying to tickle yourself!
2) Kinda dangerous! There are ways to push past the above, but I don't want to actually INJURE myself seriously!

Some things I've tried:
- Metronome. Dishing out a set number of thwaps in time with a metronome is a great way to make sure you don't slow down at any point.
- Different positions. The so-called 'diaper' position (on your back with your legs in the air) is what I've found works best for self-spanking, almost without equal. It does mildly ruin the fantasy of being bent over a lap and punished, but it makes up for it by not having you awkwardly reaching back to try to do the swats.

Different implements.
- A wooden spoon does the job, but the handle makes it fairly unwieldy and I've yet to find a good position to use it in.
- A wooden hairbrush is my usual goto, both because it hurts a lot more than a plastic one and because of the fantasy of it all.
- A cable swung from the front to wrap around is something I tried recently upon recommendation and it is the first implement to really make me jump and yelp. It's also the first implement to make me seriously worry about doing damage to myself. Those leave marks!

Can anyone offer any advice, along the lines of different techniques/methods/implements I can try out, as well as any advice to make sure I'm keeping safe while I'm making myself suffer? <3
