From what I can remember the first thing I used was a toothbrush handle and that quickly went to wooden spoon handles, than I remember using knife handles the shape of our steak knife handles were perfect. The very first "toy" that I ever used was a butt plug that I carved myself out of wood. I really really wanted to put something in my butt but I was too scared to buy anything.

I did make sure to make it super smooth and I used baby oil to get it in. It wasn't much bigger than my finger but I still struggled. I found it rather underwhelming when it was inside of me.

When much later I bought my first real butt plug it was so much more amazing.
 
When I first started exploring myself it was all about my hands, took me a while to get curious about toys, for anal use to be precise.
So there were lots of improvised toys, cannot remember which came first - some wooden dowels, pens - that sort of thing. I had been really curious about how they feel in my butt.
